Salisbury Zoo to Host Earth Day Celebration, Zoo Stampede 5K on Saturday

Salisbury, MD – Families can learn about animals and the environment at the Salisbury Zoo’s annual Earth Day celebration, set for Saturday, April 20.

Festivities kick off at 9 a.m. with the Zoo Stampede 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Vernon Powell Shoes. Registration is available online for $25 through Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m., and on race day for $30 by the start line at the Zoo’s East Gate from 7:30-8:30 a.m.

Earth Day, a free event, is sponsored by Tidemark Federal Credit Union and Delmarva Power, and it will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Families can learn about the environment from numerous local exhibitors, who will set up at tables in the Zoo. Craft vendors will feature art for sale. Children can also learn about nature with discovery boxes.

“Earth Day is always fun and educational for attendees, but this year, we’ve added even more educational experiences,” said Education Curator Kelly Colbert. “Families can enjoy a full schedule of programming and learn about animal enrichment from our keepers.”

Educational programming at the stage by the Education Center includes:

  • 11 a.m.: Story Time: Fantastic Forests
  • Noon: TREEmendous Trees: Talk and Exploration
  • 1 p.m.: Burrowing Buddies: Animal Presentation
  • 2 p.m.: Beneficial Butterflies: Talk and Exploration
  • 3 p.m.: Wonders of Water: Animal Presentation

There will also be animal talks/feeding/enrichment at exhibits in the Zoo for Earth Day.

  • 11:30 a.m.: Flamingo Talk/Macaw Training
  • 1:30 p.m.: Lynx Enrichment
  • 2:30 p.m.: Bear Enrichment
  • 3:30 p.m.: Bison Enrichment
