SALISBURY:  Due to the pandemic’s discouraging people from congregating in large numbers, the organizers of Salisbury’s “PEACE IN THE PARK” are revising this year’s local observance of the U.N. International Day of Peace. Everyone is welcome to participate in a VIRTUAL (internet-based) recognition of humanity’s yearning for peace.  This year’s effort will combine video and still photos submitted by individuals and organizations during August to create a montage released on Facebook beginning September 21. Any local entry reflecting efforts to promote peace in the community is a candidate for inclusion.

The U.N. International Day of Peace has been celebrated every September since 1982 in countries, cities, and towns around the world. Salisbury first began celebrating “PEACE IN THE PARK” in 2009, bringing together groups, organizations, and individuals to build a shared sense of peaceful community with one another and among all residents and neighborhoods of Wicomico County and surrounding areas. Historically, it has been a chance to network, learn, teach, play, socialize, and enjoy the city park.

This year provides an opportunity for past participants and new ones to consider and share how their actions, donations, prayers, writings, meetings, music, counseling, purchases, art, teaching, political efforts, etc., promote peace. This is work that lessens conflict, violence, abuse, and discrimination and brings us together. The deadline for submissions is August 31. Entries should be directed to: lnicholson@gmail.com. Previews begin on Facebook September 14. The montage on Facebook begins on the International Day of Peace (Monday, September 21) and will run indefinitely.
