Meet Salisbury University professor Dr. Gerardo “Gerry” Vasquez at the Downtown Library on Tuesday, July 25th, 5-7 pm and discover the legends, myths, folklore and science behind a total eclipse of the sun. Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments while learning what to expect this summer during The Great American Eclipse. This event is free and open to the public.
Gerardo Arturo Vázquez was hired as a Physics professor at Salisbury University in 2008. He was born in Mexico and earned his PhD in Astrophysics from the UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), Mexico’s largest and one of the most prestigious universities in the world. The computer code that he completed as part of his doctoral research was at the time one of the most sophisticated programs in existence, and it earned him a postdoctoral appointment at STScI (Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore). STScI is an institute through AURA (Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy) that operates the scientific part of the Hubble Space Telescope and the new James Web Space Telescope.
At Salisbury University, Dr. Vázquez has received several grants to continue his collaboration at the STScI working on an update for Starbusrt99 that models more properly small stellar populations (less than 105 stars), and his own personal projects such as: an alternative theory about the redshift in galaxies; and the measurement of the speed of cosmic photons. He continues to present his results at national and international conferences.
