State Senator Richard F. Colburn (R-Eastern Shore) announced today that he has sent a letter to Department of Natural Resources Acting Secretary Joseph Gill requesting an extension of the current oyster harvest season.  In a letter dated February 24, 2014, Senator Colburn stated, “I am writing to request your consideration of extending the current oyster harvesting season until April 30, 2014. Colder than average conditions this winter have lead to more snow and icing of the rivers and bays which have caused Maryland watermen to miss 45 days of the current season. It is my hope you will consider this extension to give these oyster harvesters the opportunity to make up for lost revenue and income during this time.”

The current oyster harvest season is set to close on March 31, 2014.
