Slaughter Beach, Delaware, is the annual spawning grounds of Limulus polyphemus, or horseshoe crab. Every year thousands of horseshoe crabs crowd Slaughter Beach to lay and fertilize their eggs, turning the beach into a veritable cobblestone street. This incredible natural phenomenon draws hundreds of shorebirds to feast and refuel. The annual spawning makes Slaughter Beach a key rest stop for many migrating species, including the Red Knot, whose migration will take it nearly 10,000 miles.
Join experienced photographer Bill Wallen and Ward Museum staff in witnessing this annual local event. Nikon lenses will be available for use. Meet at the Ward Museum parking lot,
transportation provided.
