The only thing more spectacular than offering to give away 40,000 pounds of watermelon during Pocomoke High School’s Back to School Night is doing it two years in a row — and this signature event is proudly organized and led by the Society of St. Andrew Delmarva.
With the coordination and energy of Carlton A. Cartwright Jr.,Community School Liaison and Restorative Practices Champion at Pocomoke High School, Worcester County Public Schools , the Society of St. Andrew Delmarva once again transformed the PHS parking lot into a bustling hub of community connection and healthy food distribution. More than 3,000 watermelons arrived on site and were shared with local families in just a few hours.
Students jumped in with enthusiasm, cheerfully loading cars and celebrating each watermelon that found a home. Several attendees mentioned this was the first watermelon they’d had all year, underscoring the importance of fresh, nutritious produce access — especially during a hot August week.
This large-scale giveaway was made possible through the generous support of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, whose funding ensures that thousands of families can enjoy a refreshing, healthy treat as they prepare for the new school year.
