United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore is celebrating Salisbury University Student United Way’s second year of community impact. In the Spring of 2013, United Way and Salisbury University partnered to establish Maryland’s first Student United Way, joining a network of over 80 University Student United Way’s across the nation. The club has since been a great success and provides students with opportunities to better the lives of Eastern Shore residents and strengthen our community.
In the 2014-2015 school year alone, Student United Way expanded the club network to more than 250 students directly impacting over 2,150 community members through volunteer, advocacy and fundraising projects. Over 1,400 volunteer hours have been achieved this year through projects including construction of a wheelchair ramp for a family in need, renovating the Salisbury Christian Shelter, tutoring and mentoring at-risk children, bell ringing for The Salvation Army and providing essential event support to local non-profits. Additional highlights include representation at the United Way Worldwide Student United Way Leadership Conference, serving as United Way advocates on campus and in the community, and the inaugural Halloween 5K Dash fundraiser, successfully raising close to $4,000 for United Way and becoming a highly anticipated annual event.
Since its inception, Student United Way has accomplished 121 volunteering and advocating projects, over 2,100 volunteer hours and raised over $10,000 for United Way. Current club Vice President, Isckar Bii, shares, “As a member of Student United Way, I’ve gained a level of passion I never thought I could have. I now have the foundation for which to build my career on. I am excited to continue advocating for the common good along with exploring how I can better serve others in my community.”
