SALISBURY, MD – When the threat of COVID-19 forced Salisbury University to cancel its traditional summer youth sports camps last summer, SU leaders still wanted to provide assistance for the young athletes who usually populate those events on campus.

Working with SU-affiliated public access channel PAC 14, Lesley Staffeldt, director of conference services, proposed a series of instructional videos, led by SU Athletics coaches, that could be shared with local youth, alumni and others.

The initiative attracted the attention of the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors – International (ACCED-I), which recently recognized SU’s efforts with its Outstanding Institutional Achievement Award: Single Event for 2021.

“We provided a free opportunity for children everywhere to participate safely from their homes,” said Staffeldt. “The effort was well supported across campus, with many different departments jumping in to assist. We showed resiliency and ingenuity during a high-stress time.”

In the videos, coaches and assistants teach basic skills for football, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey and soccer. All are available online at https://www.salisbury.edu/administration/administration-and-finance-offices/conference-services/videos-and-media.aspx.

In lieu of an in-person event, this year’s ACCED-I awards were presented during a virtual ceremony, available at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=171314624809961.
