SU Student Named Truman Scholarship Finalist

Zia-Ashraf

SALISBURY, MD—Salisbury University junior Zia Ashraf is a finalist for the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship.

The award provides up to $30,000 for graduate study and is the nation’s premier fellowship for aspiring public service leaders. Ashraf hopes to attend law school. He is a political science and international studies double major from Federalsburg, MD.

Originally from Pakistan, Ashraf graduated from Colonel Richardson High School in 2016. He will go to Washington, D.C., in early April for his day-long interview with the Truman Committee.

Ashraf was selected from among some 840 applicants from 346 campuses nationwide based on leadership, service and academic achievement. He is one of only six finalists from Maryland, including one who attends Princeton University.

This is the second consecutive year SU has had finalists, said Dr. Kristen Walton, director of SU’s Nationally Competitive Fellowships Office.
