The SACC proudly hosted the November General Membership Luncheon at JoJo’s Restaurant in Salisbury on November 20th, featuring Maryland Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks as the keynote speaker.

Before stepping into his role under Governor Wes Moore, Atticks laid the groundwork for “Grow and Fortify” and was a driving force as the Executive Director of the Brewers Association of Maryland, the Maryland Distillers Guild, and the Maryland Wineries Association.

In his opening remarks, Secretary Atticks expressed his gratitude to the local elected officials, emphasizing their unwavering support for his department and its mission.

He addressed an important issue: the profitability of Maryland’s farmers. Many Marylanders have never experienced life on a farm, resulting in a limited understanding and appreciation of the essential food sources these farms provide for both the state and the country.

Atticks drew a compelling comparison between Maryland and traditional farming states like Iowa. While agriculture is the primary economic driver in both regions, Maryland farmers benefit from their proximity to major markets—within two to three hours—enabling them to supply fruits, vegetables, poultry, and other goods to millions of consumers swiftly. This accessibility significantly boosts their net revenues and overall profitability.

He urged farmers to enhance their revenue options by incorporating experiences such as farm tours, corn mazes, and other engaging activities. However, he also highlighted a pressing concern: the ongoing development of agricultural land. With the average farm size in Maryland now ranging from five to ten acres, many farmers wishing to sell their land face challenges in finding buyers committed to continuing agricultural practices.

To conclude his remarks, Secretary Atticks passionately encouraged attendees to support local farmers by including regional products on their Thanksgiving tables—such as vegetables, chicken, turkey, or even a fine Maryland wine. By choosing local, we can all play a role in sustaining our agricultural community and celebrating the bounty that Maryland has to offer.

The next General Membership Luncheon will be held on Thursday, January 16 at 11:30 AM at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center and will feature Mary Kane, President & CEO of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and Abbi Ludwig, Vice President of Marketing & Communications. Tickets are $35 Members or $45 Non-Members and may be purchased at www.salisburyarea.com.
