The Road to Jim Crow: the African American Struggle on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, 1860-1915 will be presented on Saturday, May 26th at 11 am at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester. Author Chris Brown will speak and share what he uncovered in plain sight.
Making extensive use of primary sources, Mr. Brown has broken new ground and filled a long overlooked gap in Maryland’s Eastern Shore history. He follows the journey from the end of slavery and all that promises through the reality of the lynch law, segregation and systematic efforts at disenfranchisement. This offering is very appropriate and compelling as Cambridge became the center of African American political and cultural life.
The author is a retired civil rights attorney and professor at the University of Maryland’s Carey School of Law. The stories that Mr. Brown has unearthed during research for the book, while enlightening in the worst sense of the word, also serve to inspire. Mr. Brown will have copies of his book for sale with his autograph.
This series is offered by the Dorchester County Historical Society and will be held at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester, which is located at 1003 Greenway Drive in Cambridge, Maryland.
