The Rotary Club of Wicomico County is pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Little Free Library Organization to build and install five “Little Libraries” in Wicomico County. These are currently being installed at the following locations:
· Tide Mill Apartments,
· Hebron Savings Bank on Nanticoke Rd.
· Hebron Savings Bank in Hebron
· Bank of Delmarva on Eastern Shore Drive
· Richard A. Henson Family YMCA.
Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Through Little Free Library book exchanges, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
Academically, children growing up in homes without books are on average three years behind children in homes with lots of books, even when controlled for other key factors. One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books, especially at home. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own.
The club began this project in August of 2019 to design and build the boxes. We are proud to say that these will help so many across our county!
Annually, The Rotary Club of Wicomico County contributes over $50,000 back into our community through the support of agencies and causes including: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, scholarships for local high school and college students, The Christian Shelter, RYLA, Easter Seals Camp Fairlee, Polio Eradication (Global), Fruitland Community Center, HALO, Wicomico County Library, the construction of wheel chair ramps and much more.
