The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce (SACC) welcomed Hunter Landon, Managing Editor and Anchor for WBOC and FOX 21, as the featured speaker at its September General Membership Luncheon at the Wicomico Civic Center.
Landon shared his personal journey into broadcasting, beginning with a dream of becoming a television newsman at age 12. After an early introduction to legendary WBOC anchor Steve Hammond, Landon began his broadcasting career in radio in 2018. He is now in his fifth year with WBOC/FOX 21.
During his presentation, Landon discussed the evolution of local television, the changing media landscape and several significant stories he has covered throughout his career.
A key focus of his remarks was the importance of local journalism and Draper Media’s commitment to serving communities across Delmarva. Draper Media is a family-owned company founded by the late Tom Draper, who passed away in 2017.
“Mr. Draper believed that his company has a moral obligation to deliver news content to all of Delmarva,” Landon said. “All of our news content carries the commitment that we will cover our local communities.”
Landon noted that while the way audiences consume news continues to change, local reporting remains central to Draper Media’s mission. He explained that reporters are assigned specific beats, allowing them to develop stories focused on the communities and issues they cover.
“Some of the biggest stories I covered as a reporter came from my beat,” Landon said, highlighting the tragic loss of Cpl. Glenn Hilliard and the PFAS contamination issue in Wicomico County among the stories he has covered.
Landon also discussed Draper Media’s expansion into digital content and local sports through the Delmarva Sports Network. He said the network has attracted viewers interested in both year-round sports coverage and seasonal programming, while also creating additional opportunities for local advertisers.
Looking ahead, Landon said he expects local media companies to continue expanding their digital and streaming offerings while maintaining their connection to the communities they serve.
“I don’t believe, looking into the future, we will witness the demise of local news or consolidation of local news into larger markets,” Landon said. “Our founder, Mr. Draper, always wanted his stations to have that local feel.”
Landon’s presentation provided SACC members with an inside look at the changing media industry and the continuing role of local journalism in connecting Delmarva communities with the news and information that matters most to them.
The next General Membership Luncheon will be held on October 15, 11:30 -1:00 PM, at the Wicomico Civic Center and feature The Higher Education Leaders of Delmarva Forum. The forum will be moderated by Dr. Brit Kirwin, former Chancellor of the University System of Maryland, and former Chair the Kirwan Commission (Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education).
