Salisbury, MD – After an extensive national search and rigorous interview process, The Salisbury School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Jesse Mathers as the new Head of Upper School. Dr. Mathers, who currently holds the position of Academic Dean at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, emerged as the top choice among over 30 highly qualified candidates and three exceptional finalists.
Bringing a wealth of experience and a distinguished academic background to The Salisbury School, Dr. Mathers earned both her Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. Initially pursuing a career as a cancer researcher, Dr. Mathers transitioned to education, where she found her true passion. As an award-winning science teacher and department chair at The Calverton School in Maryland, she garnered acclaim for her innovative teaching methods and dedication to student success.
Dr. Mathers shared her personal connection to small schools during the rigorous interview process, saying, “Having spent many of my formative years as a student and teacher thriving in small schools, I have a deep appreciation for the incredible power of community and connection that makes them so special. My experiences have shown me that when students are known, respected, and valued for themselves and then provided with both challenge and support through authentic relationships with dedicated faculty, there are no limits to what they can achieve.” This personal connection underscores her understanding and value for the unique community at The Salisbury School.
Dr. Mathers’ educational philosophy aligns with The Salisbury School’s mission to cultivate global citizens through immersive and experiential learning. Her leadership
will further enhance the school’s commitment to small class ratios and foster an environment where every student is known, respected, and valued.
Dr. Mathers, her husband Craig, and their three children, Katie, John, and Sarah, have already settled into their new home in Salisbury.
