Salisbury, MD – In response to the recent decline in respiratory illness cases, TidalHealth has updated its masking policy, transitioning from mandatory masking to optional masking in all of its facilities. This change comes after a significant increase in COVID-19, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and seasonal influenza cases earlier in the year.

The previous temporary masking practices, which required surgical ear loop masks for patients, visitors, and team members in patient rooms and patient-facing areas, will no longer be enforced.

Masks are now optional for all individuals entering TidalHealth facilities, including hospitals in Salisbury and Seaford, the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute in Salisbury and Ocean Pines, the Allen Cancer Center in Seaford, and TidalHealth McCready Pavilion in Crisfield.

“While we are pleased to see a decrease in the number of respiratory illness cases, we remain vigilant and continue to prioritize the health and safety of our community and team members,” said Dr. Trudy Hall, Chief Medical Officer at TidalHealth. “The decision to shift to an optional masking policy reflects the current trend in case volumes and the ongoing efforts of our team to ensure the well-being of everyone who walks through our doors.”

The updated policy comes as a result of close monitoring of local and national health data, as well as consultation with local public health experts. Although masks are no longer mandatory, TidalHealth continues to encourage all individuals to use their discretion and to consider masking in patient-facing situations, particularly for those who may feel vulnerable or are in high-risk categories.

“We understand that the ongoing health landscape can be fluid, and we will continue to adapt as needed to keep our facilities safe,” said Dr. Hall. “We remain committed to offering the highest quality care while balancing the need for safety with the comfort of our patients, staff, and visitors.”

TidalHealth also encourages individuals to continue practicing good hand hygiene, staying home when sick, and considering vaccination for flu and COVID-19 to help reduce the spread of illnesses.
