Salisbury, MD — TidalHealth announced the public launch of TidalHealth Mobile Mammography, a new mobile breast imaging service that will travel throughout Delmarva, bringing lifesaving 3D mammograms directly into neighborhoods, workplaces and community gathering places.
TidalHealth Mobile Mammography represents a new model for delivering preventive healthcare — bringing high-quality breast cancer screening, patient navigation and community partnerships directly into neighborhoods across Delmarva.
Delmarva is fortunate to have breast cancer screenings available Monday through Friday at convenient locations throughout the region. However, TidalHealth recognizes that not everyone is able to access those locations because of transportation, scheduling, insurance, work, caregiving responsibilities, or other barriers to care. TidalHealth Mobile Mammography is designed to complement existing screening services by bringing preventative breast care closer to the people who may otherwise go unscreened.
“Timely access to high-quality preventive care is essential to improving the health of our community,” said Kathryn Fiddler, DNP, MBA, vice president of population health at TidalHealth. “By bringing mammography services closer to where people live, work and gather, we are helping more people take an important step in detecting breast cancer early.”
Screening mammograms are one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. Early detection can lead to more treatment options and better outcomes.
Supported by a $645,000 Maryland Community Health Resources Commission grant, TidalHealth Mobile Mammography combines convenient access to breast cancer screening with patient navigation and community outreach.
The initiative integrates community health workers and community partnerships to help women overcome barriers such as transportation, insurance challenges, scheduling conflicts and other social needs that can delay preventive care. The goal extends beyond increasing screening rates — it is to improve health equity, ensure timely follow-up for abnormal findings and connect women to comprehensive breast care across TidalHealth.
The mobile unit was made possible through the generosity of donors across Delmarva who rallied behind the TidalHealth Foundation’s Drive for Mobile Mammography campaign. Individuals, families, businesses and community organizations came together to fully fund the $1 million initiative, demonstrating a shared commitment to expanding access to lifesaving breast cancer screenings throughout the region.
“The success of this campaign is a powerful reflection of what our community can accomplish together,” said Jessica Hales, CFRE, vice president, chief philanthropy officer and president of the TidalHealth Foundation. “Because of the generosity of our donors, we are able to bring critical screening services directly to our neighbors, helping to remove barriers and save lives through early detection.”
This community investment ensures the program can reach more patients in a variety of settings, helping close gaps in access to preventive breast health services across the region.
“Mobile mammography is about much more than bringing a mammography unit into the community,” said Kat Rodgers, EdD, MPH, director of community health initiatives at TidalHealth. “It’s about removing the barriers that keep women from getting screened in the first place. Through partnerships with employers, community organizations and our community health workers, we’re proactively connecting women with preventive care, helping them navigate challenges that may stand in the way of screening, and ensuring they receive follow-up care when it’s needed. This is a community health strategy designed to improve outcomes — not just increase screenings.”
The mobile mammography unit will provide screening mammograms at community locations throughout the region, including employer sites, community events, health fairs, TidalHealth locations, partner organizations and areas where access to preventative screening may be limited.
Patients must meet screening mammography guidelines and may need an appointment. They should bring their insurance card, photo identification and the name of their primary care practitioner or ordering practitioner, if applicable.
