Since 2010, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has been filling a vital role in the community with its doctor of pharmacy program providing highly qualified pharmacists to the region. Recruiting and retaining talented students from the Eastern Shore is important to the health of the community, and a new partnership between UMES and Wor-Wic Community College will help to ensure that motivated local students will have a clear path toward their doctor of pharmacy degree.
Both institutions have signed a memorandum of understanding to help make the transfer process easier. The memorandum of understanding creates a structured pre-transfer advising plan for Wor-Wic students who intend to enroll in the pharmacy program at UMES.
“Ninety percent of Wor-Wic students remain in the community. This transfer path and opportunity is important to ensure our local health care workforce remains robust and able to serve our growing population,” said Dr. Kristin L. Mallory, vice president for academic affairs at Wor-Wic. “We are glad to have a strong academic partner in UMES that can help local students thrive in their respected doctor of pharmacy program.”
The agreement encompasses key elements to ensure student success, such as guiding Wor-Wic students throughout their community college career to complete all the pre-requisites necessary to transfer into the UMES program. In addition, the agreement will promote important communications such as application deadlines and scholarship reminders to boost student success.
“We are proud to partner with Wor-Wic Community College to increase access to the pharmacy profession for Eastern Shore students,” said Dr. Frederick Tejada, the acting assistant dean for student affairs and associate professor in UMES’s School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. “We look forward to working with Wor-Wic to implement this agreement fully.”
To be eligible for the program, students must have earned their high school or general equivalency diploma and must have matriculated to Wor-Wic. Students may apply as early as their first semester at Wor-Wic, starting this fall. For more information, visit worwic.edu/apply.
