United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore recently presented Wicomico Public Libraries a $35,000 check for a new adult literacy program, Project READ+.  The program, initiated by the Rotary Club of Wicomico County, will provide free tutoring to adults in the five areas of literacy; basic literacy (reading), financial literacy, health literacy, family literacy and technology literacy. Project READ+ will establish a corps of volunteers to educate local adults, and will be overseen by a Program Coordinator.

Goals of the program are to increase adult literacy in Wicomico County, increase the available job force by improving literacy rates of currently non-employable adults and empower individuals to improve their lives through literacy. The program will provide tutoring services, as well as connect adults to the community partners who can provide instruction and support.  Through lessons and workshops, Project READ+ will instruct adults in the areas of financial literacy and health literacy, as well as encourage participation in family literacy practices, thereby working to break the cycle of generational illiteracy.

Andrea Berstler, Executive Director of Wicomico Public Libraries shared, “We are looking forward to the impact we will make in the community with Project READ+.  We are thankful for the support and partnership of United Way and our community as we work together to improve the lives of adults and families in our community.”
