Interested candidates for Superintendent of Wicomico County Public Schools are encouraged to apply by March 23, which is the first consideration application deadline. Interviews with finalists will be conducted in April and/or May. The Board plans to announce the new Superintendent of Schools in late May or early June, and to have the new Superintendent start on July 1, 2022.

Current Wicomico Superintendent of Schools Dr. Donna Hanlin announced in November that she will retire on June 30, 2022, after an education career of more than 43 years. In January, Board Chairman N. Eugene “Gene” Malone Jr. announced that the Board of Education has  contracted with the MABE Superintendent Search Service on the search process, starting with a stakeholder input survey.

The stakeholder input survey for staff, students, families and the community was open from Jan. 14-24, with survey responses coming in every day the survey was open. The survey was accessible from the home page of the school system’s website at www.wcboe.org. Information about the stakeholder input survey was shared through local media, social media and the website, and all school families and staff received a phone and email message with the survey link. The Board received 260 survey responses to review.

The survey covered strengths of the county and school system, the characteristics the public believes a superintendent should possess, and what challenges a new superintendent may face. In collaboration with MABE’s superintendent search service, the Board of Education met on Feb. 9 to review the responses to the stakeholder input survey. The Board then developed the characteristics it is seeking in a new superintendent; those characteristics are included on the superintendent search flyer that is posted on the MABE website.
