Violinist James Lyon has performed at venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall. His fan base is equally impressive: He has played for Queen Noor of Jordan and late composer Gian Carlo Menotti, among others.
Lyon joins the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University (SSO) as guest soloist during the SSO’s annual fall concert, “The American Spirit,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 21, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen directs.
Lyon joins the SSO on Samuel Barber’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14. The program also includes Mysterious Mountain (Symphony No. 2) by Alan Hovahness.
The guest soloist has been lauded for his interpretation of Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major on his 1869 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin. He has given master classes around the world, including Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music, Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts, the Paris Conservatory and Rochester, NY’s Eastman School of Music. Lyon is a professor of music at Penn State University and a chamber music faculty member at Virginia’s Wintergreen Academy.
“James Lyon is a great musician and pedagogue,” said Schoyen. “We look forward to his visit to Salisbury.”
Admission to the SSO concert is $25, $20 for seniors age 60 and older, $10 for SU faculty and staff, and $5 for students and children 18 and under. Advance tickets are available online at www.SalisburySymphonyOrchestra.org and at the Guerrieri Student Union Information Desk.
The SSO is supported, in part, by grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council. Funding for the Maryland State Arts Council is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
