Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF) is pleased to announce that their structural engineer, Andrew E. Welch, P.E., has been re-certified by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges. He recently completed the FHWA Bridge Inspection Refresher Training.

According to the National Highway Institute, the Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course provides the bridge inspector the ability to, “Evaluate a variety of bridges and determine the critical areas for inspection including fracture prone details, common points of deterioration and distress, and fracture critical members.”

“Andrew leads a structural engineering team here at DBF that has been involved in a number of iconic structures on the Delmarva Peninsula, and some which serve critically among our communities’ infrastructures. Bridges are just that, and to have someone with his skillset as a key leader within our engineering team allows us to better serve the towns we all live and work in,” said DBF President and Architect, Michael Wigley, AIA, LEED AP.

Projects familiar to the area that Welch has provided work for include inspection and repairs to the bridge on Clubhouse Drive in Ocean Pines, MD; the Ocean Parkway Bridge in Ocean Pines, MD; and the replacement of the Big Millpond Bridge in Worcester County. The Big Millpond Bridge required work after a major storm event during the fall of 2016, which undermined the original bridge’s foundation. Other bridges include the recently opened 586-foot long pedestrian bridge on the campus of Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD.

Welch has worked at DBF for 34 years, joining in 1984 after earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University Institute of Technology. Welch is a member of the ACE Mentor Program of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and The Nature Conservancy Maryland/DC Chapter.
