Wicomico High School’s Next Generation Scholars Celebrate Engineers Week at University of Maryland, Eastern Shore

Hands-on learning event for 60 high school students boosts college and career readiness

Baltimore—February 13, 2020—On Wednesday, February 19, 2020, the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) will host 60 of its Next Generation Scholars (NGS) from Wicomico High School at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (UMES) in celebration of Engineers Week (EWeek) from 9:15 a.m. – 2 p.m. UMES Chair of the Department of Engineering and Aviation Science Dr. Yuanwei Jin will welcome students before they break into groups to explore five different areas of engineering through hands-on learning activities. Engineering and aviation professors will lead students through microcontrollers, robotics, basic circuit discovery, computer aided design and flight simulation experiences to educate students about programs offered at the college and inspire various career interests. Students will enjoy lunch at a UMES student cafeteria before boarding the bus back to Wicomico High School. Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, EWeek (February 16–22, 2020) is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.

BACKGROUND: Next Generation Scholars (NGS) provides funding through the Howard P. Rawlings Maryland Guaranteed Access Grant, administered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), to enhance education and career awareness and college completion for high school students with a demonstrated financial need. The Guaranteed Access Grant provides an award that will help cover the cost of full-time study at a Maryland college or university for low-income families.

MBRT currently serves nearly 2,000 students in six high schools across five counties. MBRT is one of several organizations that partner with leadership and school counselors at select schools throughout the state, including Wicomico High School, to provide grade-specific services to ensure that students eligible for NGS graduate ready for their next steps in college, career and life. MBRT coordinators help students and parents understand that college is an option for everyone while bridging the knowledge gap that exists for many families about college and their chosen career paths.
