World International Film Series at SU

11 - The Band’s Visit (Israel)

SALISBURY, MD—Salisbury University takes movie lovers around the globe to such locales as Lithuania, Israel, Mongolia, Mozambique and Canada during the 11th annual Bridges to the World International Film Series, Mondays from February 4-March 4.

All are introduced and screened at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall, followed by a discussion.

The series begins January 29 with the 1990 Lithuanian film Children from the Hotel America. The movie revolves around the lives of teenagers in soviet Lithuania who become interested in the hippie movement and circumvent the USSR’s ban on rock ’n’ roll music by secretly listening to Luxembourg radio.

Other films include:

  • February 11 – The Band’s Visit (Israel, 2007). Eight Egyptian musicians arrive by mistake in a small town in Israel’s Negev Desert, overcoming ethnic barriers to find diversion and companionship with its residents.
  • February 18 – Bogd Khaan (Mongolia, 2011): This film examines the life of the last Mongolian emperor.
  • February 25 – The Train Carrying Salt and Sugar (Mozambique, 2018). Mozambique’s first Academy Award foreign language film entry tells the story of civilians caught in the middle of the Mozambican Civil War, traveling hundreds of miles to trade locally produced salt for sugar after anti-government rebels cut off access to basic commodities.
  • March 4 – Wajd: Songs of Separation (Canada, 2018). Three months before chaos broke out in Syria in 2010, filmmaker Amar Chebib visited to film a short documentary about traditional Sufi music. Five years later, the friends he made are refuges throughout Europe, united by a love of music and country. Chebib leads an in-person discussion following the film.

All films are shown in their native languages with English subtitles.

SU joins World Artists Experiences, Inc.; Maryland’s Office of the Secretary of State International Division; and the embassies of Lithuania, Israel, Mongolia, Mozambique and Canada in presenting the series. Salisbury is one of five chosen screening locations in Maryland, including Annapolis, California, Frostburg and Towson.

Films are sponsored by the embassy of each country. Admission is free and the public is invited.
