Community members drive by it every day on their way to work and school and don’t realize the historical gem that the 1955 War Memorial holds. That gem – a parchment scroll bearing the names of Wicomico County soldiers who sacrificed their lives in WWI, WWII and the Korean War.
WHAT The memorial has sit unnoticed by most passers-by and is in need of serious repair. The time has come to make those repairs and renovate the war memorial for rededication for its 60th Anniversary in 2015. Friday, September 4th will be the official kick off for the renovation announcement and fundraising efforts.
WHY The 1955 Wicomico County War Memorial was built by county citizens with help and support of local American Legion and VFW posts at a time when the heartaches and losses of some of our Nation’s most hard-fought conflicts were still very fresh.
Both volunteer and financial support is being sought after to restore the Memorial. Anticipated work involves the refinishing of the monument and fountain, renovation of the tile plaza, replacement of the electrical lighting system and irrigation system, improving the site’s ADA accessibility, replacing benches, installing new and additional service flagpoles and new landscaping.
