April 17th, 2015 kicks off the 3rd Friday outdoor season with artists and crafters filling the streets of Downtown Salisbury, live music from local band Breakfast, and a brand new theme: Flora & Fauna! 3rd Friday will be celebrating all things plants and animals, with live animals, local produce, growers, nature lovers and more!
We will be joined by The Salisbury Zoo, The Ward Museum, Delmarva Discovery Center, GreenSBY, The Hazel Outdoor Center, The Lower Eastern Shore Beekeepers Association, 4-H Clubs, Camden Avenue Farmers Market, local farmers and growers, SU Clubs and many more! Look Pretty Play Dirty Mobile Petting Zoo will also be joining us with goats, sheep, pigs, ducks and maybe even a baby cow!
The Tony Weeg Photography Studio & Gallery hosts Print Is Not Dead: The Silkscreen Art of Erick Sahler, the local phenomenon of Erick Sahler Serigraphs. By popular demand, Erick will be debuting an 8×10 version of his legendary Downtown Salisbury print, originally a limited edition release of 16×20 prints that quickly sold out in 2012. The debut show will feature a ton of other Erick Sahler Serigraphs too, from the classics to his most recent work, and Erick has been working! This is not a show to miss.
The Art Institute & Gallery brings us a unique baseball-themed art exhibit Take Me out to the Ballgame, packed with areas of interest! The event includes a juried art exhibition of regional submissions, a youth exhibition, a highlight on the baseball illustrations of local artist John Cleary, who designed the original program cover for the Shorebird’s inaugural opening day at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, and book signings by children’s book author Jonny Nichols! A Silent Auction will have bidding open from noon until seven pm, with baseball memorabilia, signed posters, commemorative coins, box seats, Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame Museum merch, a home plate signed by Sherman and more! Baseball illustrations, original baseball art & prints will also be for sale throughout the exhibition. The AIG is located on the lower level of the Gallery Building off the Plaza.
In honor of National Poetry Month, The Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council will be hosting a Poets Party, an evening of reciting, listening and discussing the works of local poets. The night will feature piano music interludes, refreshments and new friends. All wordsmiths are invited; amateur, professional, educated or not, if you love words and love to write, pull out your diary or your private poems and present them for encouragement, critique and accolades from other writers! SWAC Headquarters is located on Poplar Hill Avenue on the 2nd floor above Season’s Best Antiques, and elevator access is available.
Two new art shows will open at Salisbury University | Downtown Campus, on North Division Street. Boundaries: an exhibition of The Young Photographers Association recently shown in New York City, draws on the concept of boundaries, featuring the work of 11 teams from the United States, Canada, and London England, including a team of Salisbury University Students. WorkPlay by Angela Malchionna is a mixed media attempt at reaching Pure Land, a Buddhist concept loosely defined as an abstract heavenly place where one can find Nirvana easily. The show’s title, WorkPlay, conflates finding pure land with duality: equal parts labor and joy, new territory is mapped using uncertainty as a guide.
The Government Office Building Steps will host the Salisbury Symphony Student Chamber Ensemble from 5:30 to 6:30, followed by performances from Dance Unlimited! Other special events include Kuhn’s Jewelers 162nd Anniversary Sale, with 30% off the entire store all day, and a special sidewalk sale, and Cake Arts “Make Your Own Cupcake” event for kids and the young at heart, plus their featured cupcake The Main Roots Coffee Espresso Cookie Crunch! Deadstock SBY also has a killer open house planned, with local artist IB Sketch on display and painting a mural, local UMES student videographers and Angelus Shoe Product reps on hand!
The Downtown Bars and Restaurants will all be ready for 3rd Friday with specials for the dinner crowd, and plenty of entertainment planned for the night. Headquarters Live, Downtown Salisbury’s brand new music venue will have Lovebettie, Rolling Stone’s ‘band to watch’ with local opener Ode & The Time Node Trio, plus an appearance by the all new Roadie Joe’s Food Truck! Mojo’s will have live music from Flint Eastwood, Market Street will have DJ B-Side late night and Brew River will have a Dock Bar Party with Harkland Band for Happy Hour and DJ C-dub late night. Roadie Joe’s Bar will have Chris Diller for Happy Hour and DJ Rusty Griswald to close the night. Cellar Door will have live music from Whiskey Belly, The Brick Room will have Meredith Rounsley for happy hour, and Chris English from nine to midnight, Market Street Inn will have DJ S-Side, and Echelon will have jazz guitarist Tom Peterson early in the evening, with live music from Breakfast starting at 9pm!
