Salisbury, MD: August 21st, 2015 from 5-8pm is the next 3rd Friday in Downtown Salisbury. From vendors, gallery exhibitions, live music and local community groups; there is something for everyone at 3rd Friday. This month’s theme is The Dog Days of Summer! This annual favorite truly has Downtown Salisbury going to the dogs with Salisbury Kennel Club demonstrations, interactive doggy activities, local canine rescue groups,
and of course, art and handmade items just for Fido!
On North Division, the Salisbury Kennel Club will be showcasing their Agility Dogs. You can even put your pooch to the test, with agility courses and challenges for dogs of all sizes. St. Albans Episcopal will host a special ‘dog and me’ version of a meditative labyrinth, designed to explore obedience, teamwork and relaxation. The Salisbury Rollergirls are even joining in the fun by holding demo in front of The Brick Room at 6:30. If you’ve never seen these girls in action it’s a great opportunity to see what it’s all about! Across the intersection in the One Plaza East Parking Lot, The Wicomico County Health Department will be hosting a Rabies Vaccine Clinic from 5 – 7pm, where local dog and cat owners can update their pet’s vaccinations for only ten dollars.
On the Plaza, arts and crafts abound, with plenty of products and handmade items for the pooch! From handmade leashes, organic dog shampoo to fine art pet portraits, you can find it all at 3rd Friday! Learn more about the Warrior Canine Connection, a non-profit that enlists service members and veterans with combat stress in the critical mission of training service dogs for fellow wounded warriors. Kids can get a doggy-makeover with face painting and crafts plus the Wicomico Public Library will be promoting Summer Reading, and offering free books to any child that takes a moment to read to Fido.
The Plaza will also feature live music from Pedro, Salisbury’s brand new musical mash-up featuring seasoned professional musicians Andy Heath, John Cox and KT Tuminello, each known from many of the areas past and current bands. A testament to the growing music scene Downtown, area musicians are getting back together and creating new bands, and Pedro will deliver music steeped in funk, blues, soul, and rock that will be sure to entertain any crowd!
On St. Peter’s Alley, off the Plaza, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will host a Blessing of the Animals with Rev. David Michaud. The annual tradition will take place in St. Peter’s newly renovated courtyard at 5:30 and 6:15. Also on the alley, The Salisbury Jaycees will again be hosting beer and wine service, with all proceeds supporting the many community projects the Jaycees produce each year.
Down on Poplar Hill Avenue, The Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council will host artists and music in Lot 10. This 3rd Friday SWAC PRESENTS: ” A DOGGONE GOOD TIME WITH THE ARTS ON SWAC STREET”, with live music from the Spirit Guides band and Ted Nichols & Drums Around the World, a Wicomico County Sheriffs K-9 Unit demonstration at 6PM, a positive communication training demo by “Smart Pups” at 7pm, and a doggy contest at 7:45 with prizes
going to cutest dog, most artistic dog, and best joker. Stop by for great sounds and entertainment, refreshments and fun times on SWAC Street.
For the art enthusiasts, The Art Institute & Gallery will hold the opening reception for the Clay Guild of the Eastern Shore Members Exhibition, from 4-8pm. While enjoying some free refreshments, you can view and purchase from the wide range of clay works and paintings of these local artists, including lovely pots, platters, vases, animal pieces, sconces, and more! The show will be open through October 9th. During 3rd Friday, pottery demos will take place on the Plaza to promote the sale inside. The AI&G is located on the lower level of the Gallery Building on the Plaza.
The newly renovated Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campus will open two brand new exhibitions. The Great American Landscape: Photographs by Ansel Adams, George Alexander Grant, Eliot Porter and the National Park Service combines works from SU’s permanent collection of early 20th century nature photography, with a digital exhibition of the work of George Alexander Grant, famous photographer buried in Snow Hill, MD. Also opening this 3rd Friday is It’s Fine, a collaborative project of graduates of the SU Graphic Design program. In an experiment of pushing boundaries, asking questions, and getting hands dirty, It’s Fine blurs the dividing line between “graphic” and “fine” art, arguing that the heart of each discipline pumps the same blood of process and passion, and driving the audience to challenge and redefine their understanding of graphic design.
Tony Weeg Photography Studio and Gallery will host the 2nd Annual Skate Punk Art Show, a combo event with a skate deck art show, a silent auction and a punk metal and hardcore show, with all proceeds benefiting the Salisbury Skatepark Phase Two! The Skate Deck Art Show, and silent auction, will take place in the Tony Weeg Photography Studio on the Plaza, is free to the public, and features some of the world’s top skateboard deck artists as well as highly talented local artists! Following the Skate Deck Art Show is a Live Punk Metal and Hardcore show at Headquarters Live featuring: Slurred Words, The Black Foot Revival Band, East Lincoln Dusters and the Abra Cadavers! Tickets are only $10, and the show is all ages with kids under 16 accompanied by an adult.
The downtown shops and boutiques have special events and sales planned. Downtown’s newest upscale resale boutique Morgan’s Closet, on East Main Street, will have a sidewalk sale on their name brand designer clothing, shoes and accessories. Angello’s Unique Gifts will be hosting a Stonewall Kitchen Tasting and Cake Art will have a ‘Create Your Own Cupcake Night’ and big discounts on dozens! Downtown Bridal will hold a ‘Dog Days of Summer Super Sale’ with discounts up to 75% off select items!
The downtown bars and restaurants are also ready for a night filled with special events and entertainment. Roadie Joes, now an all ages venue, will have great dinner specials for the whole family and live music by from the Trinidad and Tobago Steel Drum Band from 6-9 and DJ Rusty late night. Brew River will be having a Friday Night Dock Bar Party with On the Edge at 6PM and DJ C-Dub to close. The Brick Room will have a soft opening for their new menu, plus live music by Meredith Rounsley at 8pm. For the after dinner crowd, Mojo’s has local favorite Flint Eastwood, and Market Street has DJ B-Side playing all of the favorites!
