October 16th, 2015 from 5-8pm is the next 3rd Friday in Downtown Salisbury. This month’s theme is COMICON! We will be celebrating all things heroic, from comics, illustrators and superheroes, to the local heroes that help keep our community safe! Plus, it is an excuse to play dress up in Downtown Salisbury!
Comic fans that come decked out as their favorite character can compete in the first ever 3rd Friday Costume Contest! Presented by Party Heroes, the contest is open to anyone, with two categories for adults and kids 12 and under. Show off your skills and compete for top prizes provided by Phoenix Rising, PLB Comics and Party Heroes! Registration is from 5pm to 6pm, with contest starting at 6:15 in the Parker Place Garden Center, located off the Plaza. So come out, look good and win big!
On the Plaza, the powerhouse acoustic duo Waking at Seven will be take the main stage. Comic book fans can meet local comic book creators, like PLB Comics, MC Comics and Coldstream Studios, plus free comic giveaways for all! 47 ABC will have giveaways promoting hit TV shows Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, The Flash and Arrow. The Ward Museum will help kids make their own superhero masks, and The Art Institute and Gallery will be painting mini pumpkins! Plus, the Community Players of Salisbury will perform a selection from their upcoming musical-The Addams Family, which coincidentally began as single panel cartoons in The New Yorker in 1938. St. Peters Street, just off the Plaza, will celebrate Oktoberfest! The Salisbury Jaycees will close their first 3rd Friday season with a seasonal bang with selections like Yuengling Oktoberfest, Sam Adams Octoberfest and Dogfish Punkin! The Bay Brass Ensemble will be performing Oktoberfest music from 6:30 – 7pm to set the mood! Just up the street experience Sherwood Forest, as St. Peter’s Church Courtyard is transformed back into medieval times with games and activities for children and an appearance by Robin Hood himself. Seasonal food, including bratwurst and hot dogs, will be for sale, with proceeds benefiting St. Peter’s ministries. All characters welcome!
On North Division Street, 3rd Friday showcases our local heroes! The street will be filled with equipment and vehicles from veteran groups, local police and the Salisbury Fire Department. On Government Office Building steps, the 2015 Salisbury Fire Department Awards Ceremony will honor those who have exhibited exceptional bravery and selflessness as members of the Salisbury Fire Department and citizens of Wicomico County during the past year. The ceremony is open to all, and will take place from 6 to 7pm.
In front of the Old Courthouse, on North Division Street, other local civil and military service organizations will gather to inform, invite and empower. Representatives from the Salisbury Rotary Club’s Flags for Heroes project and Operation We Care will be promoting their upcoming drives. The United States Army Recruiting Office will be out with giveaways and physical challenges. Learn more about Salisbury HERO Day, coming to Downtown Salisbury on November 7th, complete with a Salisbury HERO Day 5K, and Hero Day Dog Walk! The Wicomico Masonic Lodge 91 will be coordinating a MDCHIP station, or the Maryland Child ID Program. This free of charge service provides interested parents with a comprehensive identification and protection program designed specifically to aide law enforcement agencies in the recovery of missing children.
For the art enthusiasts, The Tony Weeg Photography Studio will host an exhibition of local artist Veronique Diriker, whose reputation precedes her as being both a phenomenal artist, and a community leader. Her whimsical art can’t be pinned down into one genre; she is truly an eclectic master of many styles. All proceeds benefit the Arts & Abilities Fund at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, a fund Veronique founded and has fundraised for over the years, that ensures local opportunities in the arts.
The Art Institute & Gallery will hold their 2015 Fall Members Showcase, on Gallery Building’s lower level, featuring a wide range of art, styles and mediums submitted exclusively from active AIG Members. Check out the The Cavallaro & Cleary Visual Arts Foundation’s Gallery Under Glass exhibition, in the display windows of the Vernon Powell Building. The windows, courtesy of VP Shoes, have been transformed into a showcase highlighting the artwork of eight local high school seniors selected to receive 2015 CCART Scholarships. The exhibition is made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, and donations are being accepted to support 2016 Scholarships.
Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campus will opens a brand new exhibition DUSTY FUNK! An Afro-Future Space Opera, a solo exhibition by local artist David Brame. Using poetry, prose, comic books and mixed media Brame highlights, celebrates and contests the category of “other.” His work seeks to start a conversation about the implications of constantly being “othered” and how this plays out in the daily interactions.
Down on Poplar Hill Avenue, The Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council will host Arts on SWAC Street Presents: Oktoberfest, with artists, vendors and live music from Ted Nichols & Drums Around the World, German music, the classic Oktoberfest Chicken Dance, kids activities, German chocolate cake and more! Dressing up is encouraged and the best German attire wins a prize. While you are there be sure to stop in Season’s Best Antiques for great bargains!
The downtown shops and boutiques have special events and sales planned. Bury Apparel will have Smallsbury Superman T-Shirts for only $5 bucks! Barefoot Baby Boutique has classic wooden construction cars stocked up and ready to celebrate local heroes with a children’s coloring station where kids can draw their favorite emergency responder vehicles for a chance to win a collection of heroes for imaginary play! They will also accepting donations for a local children’s coat drive. Morgan’s Closet, Downtown’s source for gently worn, name brand designer clothing will be open on East Main and Corsets and Cogs handmade design boutique is having a 3rd Friday Jewelry sale.
At Headquarters Live, reggae band Passafire, makes a homecoming stop on their 2015 Getaway Tour with special guests Lionize and Backbeat Soundsystem. It’s an honor to have these guys make a stop in humble Salisbury, even if Passafire front man mom owns Kuhn’s Jewelers! The show is ages 18+, tickets are only $10 and doors open at 7PM.
The downtown bars and restaurants are also ready for a night filled with special events and entertainment. Brew River is having Docktoberfest with beer selections from Union Old Pro Gose, Professor Fitz Brim 1809 Berliner Wiesse, Kostritzer Schwartzbier, and 3rd Wave, plus German style food and live music from The Bonedaddys. Roadie Joe’s will have dinner specials for the whole family and live music by Dark Gold Jazz with Trendel. The Brick Room will have live music from the Double Nickels from eight to eleven. For the dinner crowd, Sushi de Kanpai, Mojo’s and Market Street will have great specials and quiet dining. Late night Mojo’s has local favorite Flint Eastwood, and Market Street has DJ B-Side playing all of the favorites!
