May 20th, 2016 from 5-8pm is the next 3rd Friday in Downtown Salisbury! This month’s theme, Urban Artscapes, is our chance to celebrate the history and architecture of Downtown, as well as explore, why public art, even temporary works, have become such common forms of beauty and expression in modern cityscapes. From interactive art, walking tours, and scavenger hunts, there will be plenty of ways to explore what our city really looks like!
On North Division Street, the street itself will be transformed into a canvas with chalk art! Watch the install of the 100 Seeds mural by Paul Boyd, Shelton Hawkins, and Erik White in The Brick Room alley, plus live performance by Devon Beck and music by Bury Trap Mob sponsored by Deadstock SBY. Deadstock SBY is also hosting an in-store art show and original t-shirt giveaway. The Clay Guild of the Eastern Shore presents Clay-a-palooza, with wheel demonstrations on the street, kids hand building activities, pottery pong and pottery for sale. Plus you can dunk County Executive Bob Culver and Mayor Jake Day in a dunk tank for Real Men Making Strides, an American Cancer Society fundraiser.
On the Plaza, artists, crafters and non-profits will fill the streets. The main stage will host the Meredith Rounsley EP Release Show, featuring Meredith and mixture of local musicians playing all your favorites and tracks from her brand new album “Weapon” available for free download. Pick up an Architectural Scavenger Hunt at and test your eyes as you hunt the Plaza and North Division to find all the clues or build your own city with Legos courtesy of Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services. Plus, the Salisbury Jaycees will be pouring Evo’s Primal Pale Ale, Evo’s Rise Up and Pinehople IPA.
The Art Institute and Gallery, downstairs in the Gallery Building, will have art, music, and light fare at the opening of REBOOT, the annual AI&G member’s exhibition. Up on the Plaza an AI&G volunteer will be doing a collaborative art project with kids and adults, which will be hung in the classroom windows for the rest of the month!
The Tony Weeg Photography Studio will host the Wicomico County Youth & Awareness Film and Art Competition. Works of art and film from high school students all over the county will be displayed, all striving to convey the dangers of addiction in the face of a growing heroin and opioid epidemic. Scholarship prizes up to $1,000 will be awarded to winners in both Art & Film categories, and the winners will be announced at 3rd Friday at 7:30pm.
On St. Peters Street, the Four Seasons Garden Club will be having a potted flower sale, plus lots of going on at St. Peter’s Church! Guided tours will highlight the church’s unique architecture, art and history, plus hands on art project for kids in the courtyard, meatball sandwiches in the parish hall and a weekend long indoor yard sale!
Salisbury University Art Galleries | Downtown Campus will host the opening reception for its brand new exhibition Cheryl Hochberg | Strange Pastures. Hochberg paints animals, realistically rendered, at times isolated and other times in environments. These creatures are a platform to explore qualities of familiarity and strangeness as well as the knowable and the mysterious. Also still on display, Organic Space: New Work in Glass by Jon Rees explores the architectural language of form, space, and light through sculpture.
Down on Poplar Hill Avenue, The Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council will celebrate 3rd Friday outdoors by hosting Arts on SWAC Street | Grow with the Arts, on the street in front of its in its elevator-accessible loft space above Season’s Best Antiques from 5-8pm. Join SWAC to enjoy refreshments, kids crafts, art vendors, garden art and more, with live music by Ted Nichols & Drums Around the World from 5-6:30, D’ann Danse presents: Dansin’ on SWAC Street from 6:30 – 7pm, followed by Hunter Wirt and the Mardela Middle and High School band from 7-8. You can even decorate and plant your own flower cup and follow the growing creations with #SWACflowers.
3rd Friday is always shopper’s paradise, with the downtown shops and boutiques open late with special events and sales! Kuhn’s Jewelers is has something special for grads, with 20% off all graduation gifts. Be sure to stop by Angello’s Unique Gift’s brand new location in the newly renovated River View Commons building, previously the Feldman’s Building, with Acorn Market joining them next month!
The downtown bars and restaurants are ready for 3rd Friday! Roadie Joe’s will have live music from Kaleb Brown on the patio from 5:30 – 8:30 and Dust N Bones late night. Brew River will have an all ages Friday Night Dock Party with the Bo Dickerson Band and DJ BSide late night. The Brick Room have Phinex Diego of happy hour 5-7 with great specials and local “artscapes” by local artists on display. Market Street will have local duo Freak Flag Fly late night and Mojo’s will have local rockers EastWood!
Just for 3rd Friday, Salisbury Downtown Trolley service will start earlier at 5 PM in front of the Perdue School of Business and will run until 7 PM. Service will resume later that night at 9 PM and run until 2 AM, complete with a new stop on South Boulevard at the intersection of Hanson Street. Boarding is only $1 and will bring you from Salisbury University and surrounding areas to Downtown.
