Salisbury, MD — Dr. Sean Cooper, senior lecturer of Japanese in Salisbury University’s Modern Language and Intercultural Studies Department, has been selected for the Japan Foundation’s 2026 Special Training Program for Non-Native Teachers of Japanese.
Fewer than 15 educators throughout the U.S. were selected for the 25-day intensive program in June, which begins with a two-day orientation in Los Angeles, followed by more than three weeks at the Japanese Language Institute in Urawa, Japan.
There, participants will participate in lectures and workshops on the latest trends in Japanese language education, linguistics, and Japanese culture, as well as site visits to education facilities, networking events, and cultural experiences with the goal of strengthening Japanese language proficiency.
Cooper’s participation is expected to help facilitate the continued development of SU’s Japanese language program. Since 2013, Japanese has been offered as a class at the 101 and 102 levels, with independent study options available.
Japanese fulfills requirements for SU’s Asian studies minor and plays a vital role in preparing students to participate in exchange opportunities with Aoyama Gakuin University, SU’s study abroad partner institution in Tokyo.
In addition to his position with the Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies Department, Cooper also is a senior lecturer for SU’s English Language Institute and a study abroad advisor for the University’s Janet Dudley-Eshbach Center for International Education.
The Japan Foundation is an independent administration institution under Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
