The Salisbury Jaycees are joining with other Jaycees chapters in the United States and beyond this month to help fund a vision clinic for a village near Bogata, Colombia.
As part of the “See Your Global Vision” fundraiser, the Jaycees are offering a lawn flamingo “flocking” service throughout Salisbury and surrounding areas. Through the initiative, area residence may pay to have a friend or neighbor’s yard covered with eyeglass-wearing plastic pink flamingos, with signs explaining the fundraiser’s purpose.
The Salisbury chapter established the project as part of its parent organization’s JCI Project Impact 100 initiative, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Jaycees internationally. Through that program, chapters were asked to create collaborative events to target local needs while making a global impact.
“The Salisbury Jaycees have a legacy of community service in Wicomico County and surrounding areas through projects such as our annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Tour and Treat Street safe Halloween trick-or-treating initiative,” said Kristy Johnson, project chair. “This was a perfect opportunity to share our knowledge and commitment with other chapters and invest ourselves more fully in the global initiatives of Junior Chamber International (JCI).”
For the project, the Jaycees are partnering with Global Vision 2020, a non-profit organization based in Easton, MD, which will provide adjustable eyeglasses for the clinic. JCI Bogata will run the clinic, providing the glasses for villagers that otherwise may not have access to eye care. Jaycees chapters in northern New Jersey; New Baden, IL; and Ontario, Canada (JCI Durham) also are raising funds for the project.
Flockings may be ordered from the Salisbury Jaycees through Monday, August 31. Fees begin at $20.20, enough to purchase one pair of adjustable glasses. Flocking “insurance” is available, also starting at $20.20, for those who believe they may become a victim of flocking, but would rather send the flamingos elsewhere. Checks for flocking should be made out to Salisbury Jaycees.
The chapter also is accepting non-flocking donations for the project. Donations may be sent to Salisbury Jaycees, See Your Global Impact, P.O. Box 404, Salisbury, MD 21803. Checks should be made to Global Vision 2020, with “Jaycees” in the memo line. Donations will be accepted through Thursday, September 10.
