Why:
Dog walk benefits vests our tri county area police k9’s (bullet & stab proof dog safety vests and vehicle heat alarms) and oxygen masks for small animals rescued by tri county area fire departments.
The nationwide initiative educates the public about the importance of being a responsible dog owner and celebrates the deep bond between humans and their canine companions.

The Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club Charitable Trust, Inc. (SMKCCT), a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, has through individual donations and funds raised through its dog walks purchased 6 stab/bullet proof vests for Police K-9s in Wicomico and Worcester Counties (Somerset does not have police K-9s) and provided numerous small animal oxygen mask kits for Wicomico County fire departments to resuscitate pets suffering from smoke inhalation. Ten more are currently on order. One of the Trust’s aims is to have all fire departments in the Tri-Counties of Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset to have kits. Donations are needed to accomplish that goal.
In 2014, the Trust donated two vehicle sensor units to the Wicomico Sheriff’s Department for their K-9 vehicles. An additional unit will be installed when the department’s new K-9 vehicle arrives. One officer stated, “These are vital pieces of equipment. They notify the handler in the event the vehicle shuts down or becomes too hot inside. The heat alarm rolls the windows down and activates the lights and siren. The equipment also has a bail out feature. This allows the handler to ‘pop’ the door open remotely in an event that he or she needs their K-9 partner.” The cost for each unit, excluding installation, is $1300. The wonderful thing about these units is that they not only protect the K-9 but the K-9 handler as well with the “pop and release” feature. In addition to those projects, SMKC Charitable Trust promotes responsible dog ownership through educational programs and various events.
