Salisbury—Mayor Jake Day is pleased to announce the City of Salisbury’s recent securing of a long-term contract that will guarantee not only clean, renewable electricity for the city, but also lock in electric supply rates for the next five years (June 2020-June 2025). This contract will secure the price of electricity, which was originally set to increase on October 1, 2019, potentially costing the City an additional $79,000 per year. The contract will allow for more flexibility within the overall budget, as well as act as yet another important step toward sustainability for the City of Salisbury.
This clean electricity purchased under this supply agreement powers City streetlights, traffic lights as well as City facilities such as Salisbury Police and Fire buildings, the Wastewater Treatment plant and more.
The City is excited to partner with Constellation Energy Resources, LLC, an Exelon Company, with whom they have secured the longest term contract possible, with the lowest prices based on current market rates, saving approximately $225,000 annually. Most notable, this agreement with Constellation Energy affordably incorporates wind-based renewable energy certificates that match 100% of the City’s electricity usage for the term of the contract.
“We are proud to be able to secure clean, sustainable energy at a fixed rate for the next five years, allowing us to use the funds that are freed up to better other areas of our community. This is another feather in our cap as we lead the environmental movement both on the Eastern Shore and in Maryland” shared Mayor Jake Day.
This competitive electricity procurement is part of the City’s comprehensive Energy Management Program, which was established in 2004. The inclusion of 100% renewable energy certificates meets one of the key Energy Management Program goals for the next five years.
