Many Maryland Eastern Shore families served by the Maryland Food Bank – Eastern Shore Branch will soon receive free ENERGY STAR® certified compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. The light bulb giveaway is part of Delmarva Power’s residential energy efficiency Lighting Program which supports Gov. Martin O’Malley’s EmPOWER Maryland initiative to help the state reduce energy consumption by 15 percent by 2015.

Delmarva Power will provide 19,000 CFLs for distribution to 4,750 food bank families to help them reduce their energy costs and free up limited resources for other necessities. This effort also allows more Maryland customers to benefit from the company’s Lighting Program.

“Installing CFLs is an easy way to help lower energy use since CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent lightbulbs and can save about $40 in electricity costs over the life of each bulb,” said John Allen, Delmarva Power region vice president. “That is a significant savings when dollars are tight, and it’s why we are pleased to help our customers better manage their energy use.”

Allen also noted that this announcement encouraging the use of energy efficient light bulbs is symbolic since it occurs on Earth Day, which was established in 1970 as an annual event to educate people about protecting the earth.

“Household items are very popular among our food bank customers,” said Jennifer Small, Maryland Food Bank managing director. “To be able to provide these necessities, especially energy efficient light bulbs, can make a real difference in helping people manage their monthly budgets and free up more financial resources for food.”
