Minds in Motion Children’s Museum and the Richard A. Henson Family YMCA have teamed up to offer Have a Heart Save a Heart Kids CPR Certification Class on February 23, 2019. The training will take place at the Henson Family YMCA on Schumaker Drive in Salisbury, Maryland at 8:30 am. This course is targeted for children and pre-teens ages 9 to 14 years old. This hands on skill training prepares students to act in an emergency situation. Students will leave with their CPR certification and a general overview of first aid.
Why teach children and pre-teens CPR? According to the American Heart Association, at the age of 9 children can learn and retain CPR skills. In addition, nearly 45% of cardiac arrest victims that were provided bystander CPR occurring outside of the hospital, survived. Recently, a patron of the YMCA survived a cardiac arrest after swim team members alerted others of the need for CPR. These young Y members were happy to help and many wished they had the ability to do more. During this training, we will provide instruction on how to identify an emergency, call for help and assist victims until trained professionals arrive. Our focus will be to help others while keeping the rescuer safe.
Slots are limited to the first 20 students to sign up. Registration is available online at http://www.ymcachesapeake.org/locations/richard-henson-family-ymca or in person at the YMCA front desk. The certification class fee will be $20.00 each. This class will be held from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Parents must attend for students’ ages 9-10.
Please bring water, a pencil and a notebook for notes. Children will need to wear comfortable clothing as this will be a hands on course. Snacks will be provided by Minds in Motion Children’s Museum.
