In February, hearts are on everyone’s mind as Valentine’s Day approaches. But this year, celebrate American Heart Month too.
On the Lower Shore, the rates of high cholesterol and blood pressure levels are high: 40 percent of adults in Wicomico have high blood pressure, and 45 percent have high cholesterol. Those are key heart disease risk factors. But here’s the good news: There are ways to reduce your risk.
Know your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and body mass index. Your doctor can help you explore how diet, exercise and medication can help keep those numbers at healthy rates. Know how to save a life: Peninsula Regional Medical Center is offering a free Friends & Family CPR class on February 10. To sign up, or to see PRMC’s many other Heart Month activities and screenings, visit www.peninsula.org/heartmonth.
So forget the box of chocolates. Taking proactive steps instead could be the best gift of all: good health, and the ability to be there for — and potentially save — those you love.
