Not God, A Play In Verse by Marc J. Straus to Benefit Relay for Life

RELAY FOR LIFE FLYER

*This is a play about cancer, not God.

Cancer like you’ve never heard it before. “Not God,” a two-act, two-character piece written in verse by Marc Straus tackles a subject Mr. Straus knows intimately: oncologists and their patients.
“Not God” takes the audience into the private space of a patient and her doctor. The play consists of separate poems linked in continuous action. The two actors — the patient and the doctor — speak in internal monologues, never addressing one another directly, though some poems are enacted simultaneously.
The doctor is a conflicted human being. “He’s not a heroic figure, but a guy in the trenches,” who can’t possibly meet his patient’s expectations, Mr. Straus said.
Patients tell the doctor, “I know you’re not God.” But what’s implicit, Mr. Straus said, is “I need you to be God.”
