Neighborhood residents and community volunteers will participate in a Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services (SNHS) community service project this week. As part of a national program called NeighborWorks Week, they will implement playground cleanups in target neighborhoods in the city on Saturday, June 14, with the goals of maintaining a clean, safe environment for the children of Salisbury and continuing SNHS’s mission to improve the community.

“Community improvement activities are a crucial piece of neighborhood revitalization,” said Cheryl Meadows, Executive Director, Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services. “Positive appearance can help to attract new neighbors and allow existing residents to see that progress is taking place in their neighborhood. Our volunteers signed up to help in the community and will be donating their time to cleaning up, mulching, and painting and improving our communities from the inside, out.”

SNHS will bring together residents, government officials and organizational partners to celebrate through the following NeighborWorks Week activity.

Three playground clean-up events will be held simultaneously on Saturday, June 14, from 9:00am to 12:00pm, including the East William Street Playground, the Lake Street Playground and the Newton-Camden Tot Lot. In addition to the time and effort contributed to the project, The City of Salisbury is providing materials to assist in this community effort.  Residents of the nearby neighborhoods, and other volunteers are encouraged to come out and take part in this wonderful community event.  Contact Clay Tarpley at SNHS for more information.

Local Impact, National Observance

During NeighborWorks Week, Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services and more than 200 other NeighborWorks organizations across the country mobilize tens of thousands of businesspeople, residents and government officials in a week of community change and awareness. They will rehab and repair homes, paint and landscape properties, conduct neighborhood tours, recognize successful partnerships and host a number of events that educate, train and inform.

NeighborWorks Week is just one example of volunteer activities. Throughout the year more than 7,000 volunteers work with Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services, and other NeighborWorks nonprofits to create communities everyone is proud to call home. Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services is part of the NeighborWorks network, an affiliation of more than 240 nonprofit organizations located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In 2013, the NeighborWorks network generated more than $5.8 billion in total direct investment and helped 300,000 individuals and families with affordable housing and counseling.

The NeighborWorks network was founded and is supported by NeighborWorks America, which creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities.
