ALAN BRAUER OF “TEACH FOR AMERICA” TO SPEAK AT ROTARY CLUB OF SALISBURY OCTOBER 16

The Rotary Club of Salisbury is pleased to welcome to its Thursday, October 16 meeting Alan Brauer, Senior Managing Director, Teacher Leadership Development for Teach For America Baltimore. His presentation will provide a brief overview of the program, vision for the program’s partnership with Eastern Shore school districts and opportunities to get involved in their expansion efforts.

Teach For America is a national teacher and leadership corps whose mission is to ensure that all children have access to an excellent education. Top college graduates and professionals commit to teach for at least two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity for low income students.

Since its founding in 1990, nearly 37,000 participants have reached more than 3 million children nationwide. For over 20 years, Teach For America has served in rural communities, including schools in Eastern North Carolina, the Mississippi Delta, and the Rio Grande Valley.

Brauer manages a team of directors who provide intensive training and support to first and second year teachers. He is also leading Teach For America’s efforts to expand its impact across Maryland.

He joined Teach For America in 2001 after graduating from Goucher College. As a corps member, Brauer taught first grade on the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico as part of the first Teach For America cohort in the area. In 2003 he joined the Teach For America New Mexico staff and led the region’s teacher leadership development efforts for 7 years before moving back to Maryland in 2010.

The Rotary Club of Salisbury meets every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Rotary Scout and Community Center at 1715 Riverside Drive in Salisbury.
