Mayor Jake Day is pleased to announce that a team from Salisbury’s Water Division has once again won 1st place in the CSAWWA (Chesapeake Section of the American Water Works Association) “Top Ops” competition. This is the second time Salisbury’s team has brought home the trophy. With the victory, the team moves on to the national competition which will be held at the AWWA Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas next summer.
“Top Ops” is known as the “college bowl” of the water industry. Teams of water operators and lab personnel compete against each other in a fast-paced question-and-answer tournament which is presided over by a moderator. Teams are presented with a broad range of questions and math problems which they must solve for points. The quiz show format tests the understanding and quick thinking of operators as they answer challenging technical, regulatory and customer service questions. Salisbury was represented in the competition by Water Treatment Plant Superintendent Cori Cameron, and Assistant Superintendent Ron Clapper.
Some of the topics which put the Salisbury team to the test were employee safety, plant maintenance, hydrology, public health, chemistry, and water safety.
Mayor Jake Day said, “This win is the latest is a string of big successes for our Water Works team. Maryland’s best-tasting drinking water three years in a row—5 times total—and, this past spring, “1st Place Ground Water” in the CSAWWA’s Annual Water Taste Test Challenge. Now, for the second time since 2015, our team has brought home the trophy in the ‘Top Ops’ competition. Unlike the other awards which reflect the quality of our drinking water, this award is a direct reflection of the technical expertise and talent of our employees. Congratulations, Cori and Ron, and we know you’ll do us proud at the national competition!”
The American Water Works Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition will take place June 11th – 14th, 2018, in Las Vegas, NV.
