Upcoming Youth Protection Trainings from Big Brothers, Big Sisters

volunteer

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake (BBBSGC) has a series of two trainings coming up that community members are encouraged to attend. A Child Abuse Prevention and Response training will be held on May 19th from 6:30-8:30 PM. A Bullying Prevention and Response training will take place on June 12th from 6:30-8:30 PM. Both trainings will take place in the Greater Salisbury Building, 200 W. Main Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Approximately 6 million children are referred to child protective services every year. It is estimated that every 10 seconds a case of child abuse is reported and many cases go unreported. A BBBSGC staff person will discuss the types of abuse nationally and in Maryland, how to recognize the signs of abuse, steps to take if a child discloses abuse, and prevention efforts in Maryland.

Being victims of bullying is an unfortunate reality for many youth in our schools. Today, however, these youth can’t go home and leave the bullying in schools. With social media, email and text messaging, they can be bullied 24/7. In this workshop, our knowledgeable staff will discuss the types and prevalence of bullying, its effects on youth development, prevention techniques, how to take action and encourage legislation, and more.

BBBSGC is proud to offer these trainings to the community at large and encourages anyone who works with youth directly or indirectly to attend. For more information about either workshop, contact Kelsi Owens at kowens@biglittle.org or 410-726-2900.  To register, please visit our website at www.biglittle.org.
