On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Wicomico County unveiled renovations to the carriage house at
WinterPlace Park in Salisbury, Md. during a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Executive Bob Culver, County Councilman Joe Holloway along with representatives from the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, the Wicomico County Fair and Equestrian Center participated in the ribbon cutting.
As a part of the County’s capital improvement plan, renovations to the Carriage House were undertaken to restore the exterior of the structure. The County’s Parks Division oversaw the project, contracting with local businesses Hunter-Allied of MD, Inc. out of Berlin and Coastal Coatings and Service, LLC of Parsonsburg to carry out the work. The roof, windows, doors, siding and gutters were restored or replaced, depending on their condition. The newly renovated 22,000 square foot carriage house will be utilized by the Wicomico County Fair on Aug. 14-16 and in the future by the Wicomico Equestrian Center.
Additional renovations could expand its use in the future.
Built in the mid 1960’s, the carriage house stands at the entrance to the WinterPlace Park and the Wicomico County Equestrian Center. It was originally used as a museum by the WinterPlace Show Horse Training Center. Through the years, the building fell victim to time, weather, insects and vandalism. The dilapidated structure was the first impression Wicomico County gave to citizens and visitors coming to WinterPlace for a horse show, the Wicomico Farm and Home Show, Pork in the Park, the USSSA World Series. When faced with the question of whether the building should be demolished or renovated, County leadership realized there was potential underneath the aging structure.
