Delmarva Public Radio earns eight CAPBA awards

SALISBURY, MD—From features to editorials, stories told by Delmarva Public Radio (DPR) have earned praise from the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association (CAPBA).

DPR (WSCL 89.5 FM and WSDL 90.7 FM) garnered eight 2020 CAPBA awards in the non-metro radio category.

The stations, which broadcast from the Salisbury University campus, have won more than 60 awards in the past decade.

News Director Don Rush earned seven of the honors for stories including:

  • “Immigrants Crossing the Border” – Outstanding Coverage of a Continuing Story
  • “Legacy of Lynching” – Outstanding News Series
  • “Ocean City Prepares for White Marlin Open” – Outstanding Use of Sound
  • “History of African-American School” (Hockessin School 107, involved in the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case) – Outstanding Specialty Reporting
  • “Hockey Comes to Delmarva” (Delaware Thunder minor league hockey) – Outstanding Sports Feature
  • “Vigil” (held at Asbury Methodist Church in Salisbury to mourn and reflect on mass shootings in El Paso, TX, and Dayton, OH) – Outstanding Serious Feature
  • “Earth Day at the Zoo” – Outstanding Light Feature

DPR essayist George Merrill garnered the stations’ eighth award this year, winning the Outstanding Editorial or Commentary category for his look at “Climate Change.”

DPR was selected for these accolades from among some 70 radio and television stations in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. With WESM 91.3 FM, DPR’s stations become part of the newly formed Delmarva Public Media partnership on Wednesday, July 1.
