The Richard A. Henson Foundation recently provided a $5,000 grant to support United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore’s Imagination Library Program. The Imagination Library delivers free books each month to the homes of local children ages birth to five to encourage reading literacy and ensure success in kindergarten and beyond.
Donna Altvater, Executive Director of the Richard A. Henson Foundation shared, “We are excited to partner with United Way to support the Imagination Library. Studies show that reading aloud promotes early language skills and later results in a child’s success in school. We remember with fondness reading to our children and felt it was an opportunity that should be available to all children, regardless of their circumstance. We could imagine the excitement a new book arriving in the mail would bring a child…it is a gift that keeps on giving!”
The grant will provide over 2,300 books to nearly 200 children on the Lower Eastern Shore. Since Imagination Library began in May of 2012, United Way has distributed nearly 42,000 books to over 2,660 children in Worcester, Wicomico, Somerset and Dorchester Counties.
