Salisbury, MD — Kaylee Dickson, RN, of TidalHealth Peninsula Regional’s 5 South patient care unit, has been selected as the August 2024 recipient of the DAISY Award for her compassionate care and special attention provided to a recent patient.
In her nomination, a peer on the unit wrote:
“Kaylee took care of a patient on our unit who has been here for over a month awaiting placement. She noticed that he had no personal clothing and took it upon herself to bring him in brand new shirts, pants, and socks. When I took over for the patient, he was smiling ear to ear because he felt so good/confident in these new clothes.
She is always going above and beyond for her patients, even keeping hair ties and bottles of shampoo and conditioner in her locker in case there is someone who needs their hair washed or tied up.
She truly cares about her patients, and she is the epitome of a compassionate nurse.”
Dickson was recently honored with the DAISY Award in a ceremony before her colleagues. She received certificates commending her for being an extraordinary nurse, and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease.
The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
