Artists Wanted to Paint Electric Utility Boxes in Downtown Salisbury
Salisbury, MD: Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District is accepting artist proposals for the painting of seven electric utility boxes in Downtown Salisbury. Artists are invited to submit design proposals by August 25th, with seven winning designs awarded by August 31st, 2020. Interested artists must submit an application, examples of other work, and a design proposal – with selected artists being compensated $1,000 to $2,500 to complete their design, with compensation varying due to differences in box size.
The project was initiated back in 2014, after Delmarva Veteran Builders brought the concept to the Salisbury Arts District, and helped work with representatives from Delmarva Power to gain permissions for the project in the arts district. So far, thirteen power boxes have been painted, funded by contributions from Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District, the Park N Flea, the City of Salisbury Water Department, Delmarva Veteran Builders and Gillis Gilkerson. This next round of seven boxes will bring the project to a total of twenty boxes, and is funded by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. Additionally, the completed power boxes and many other public art items in Downtown Salisbury will be compiled into a mobile friendly public art walking tour.
“Painting power boxes has been a great project for the arts district”, says Executive Director Jamie Heater, “the drab metal boxes hide in plain sight all around us – and offer a unique opportunity to introduce bright works of art for all to enjoy”. Interested artists should contact Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District for more information. All applications for this round of awards must be submitted no later than August 25, 2020. Winning proposals will be selected by a panel of qualified professionals, and announced no later than August 31, 2020, with work to be completed by mid-November.
