From wrestlers to poodles, Wicomico County hosted three large-scale events this spring. In total the three events generated an estimated economic impact surpassing $5 million. In fiscal year 2015, Wicomico County’s tourism division is on pace to generate a total economic impact of $47.5 million. Forty-seven events have been sold and held, with seven of a regional or national caliber. These events drew 114,000 visitors and required 32,000 hotel room nights.
The most recent event was the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association’s (MAWA) Eastern Nationals, which was held in early May. The tournament drew over 3,400 individuals including wrestlers, coaches and families. The Eastern Nationals fell on the heels (or paws) of the 83rd Annual International Poodle Club of America Show, which drew 700+ Poodles and their handlers to Wicomico County. Earlier in April, MAWA’s South Regionals brought over 3,300 attendees. All three events took place at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, where organizers have committed through 2018.
The next large-scale event on the books for Wicomico County is the United States Specialty Sports Association’s (USSSA) Eastern World Series, which is planned for July 15-Aug. 1. This will be the ninth consecutive year Wicomico County has hosted the tournament, which draws close to 400 teams to the region. The event’s dramatic growth over the last few years has allowed it to expand outside Wicomico County’s borders, and the tournament is now hosted in partnership with the Town of Ocean City and Worcester County.
