Funding focuses on addressing unmet needs of women, girls
The Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore (CFES) granted $25,000 to area nonprofits during its 6th annual grant reception on June 22nd. The Foundation’s Women’s Fund focuses its grant making efforts on addressing the unmet needs of women and girls in Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties.
“Annual Women’s Fund grants are used for so many wonderful programs that otherwise might not be possible in our area,” states Erica Joseph, CFES President. “It’s inspiring to see the impact these grants have on local women and girls.”
The Women’s Fund of the Eastern Shore was created through the power of collective philanthropy. Members work together to help change the lives of local women and girls by pooling financial resources in hopes of developing strong, self-sufficient women, and positive change in the local community.
Grants recipients for 2017 are as follows:
Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Inc. – The grant enables the Forensic Nursing program to purchase much needed equipment used to gather critical evidence from female victims of assault.
Worcester Youth & Family Counseling Services, Inc. – The grant allows SAGES, a two-year program that helps girls who are experiencing difficulty or conflict in their homes or schools, to attend a college orientation opportunity, eat a meal on campus, participate in a family gathering event, and assist in other aspects of SAGES.
Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County, Inc. – The grant supports renovation construction costs at 304 Martin Street, where a mother and her two daughters will be living by the start of the 2017-2018 school year.
Village of Hope, Inc. – The grant helps to offset the cost of transportation using cab vouchers to enable their guests to travel to work and attend educational and job trainings.
Eleven 21, Inc. – Epoch Dream Center – The grant provides after-school programming to approximately 23 girls that will be enrolled in the program for the 2017-2018 school year. Funding will be used towards academic tutoring, mentor/mentee match support, supplies, and providing meals for the girls.
Salisbury University, Office of Graduate Studies & Research – The grant helps the Center of Extended and Lifelong Learning with their 2017 Girls Innovation Academy. The three-week program focuses on leadership and communication, innovation and technology, sustainability and civic engagement skills and knowledge.
Girls Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc. – The grant supports an outreach program at Pinehurst Elementary School to serve approximately 35 girls. The program focus for the 2017-2018 school year will be “It’s your story – tell it! A Leadership Journey.”
MAC, Inc. – The grant assists in development of their PEARLS older adult depression program. This grant will specifically help women who might otherwise not receive services for depression, including cancer survivors and women with chronic diseases.
Salvation Army – Salisbury Corps – The grant supports their Wicomico County Softball Leagues by providing three softball teams with financial support for transportation, uniforms and team fees.
