Horizons Chair Wins Award

Horizons Salisbury School

Horizons at The Salisbury School, a non-profit dedicated to the achievement of students from low-income homes in Wicomico County, announced that Teresa McCain has been honored with the 2015 Educator Luminary Award, during the Friends of Wicomico Public Library’s 3rd annual Light of Literacy Awards ceremony held Thursday, April 9, 2015.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Teresa’s accomplishment within the community,” said Dr. Harlan Eagle, Executive Director of Horizons. “She brings a wealth of experience and passion to the Board and is a true champion for the success of our youth.”
The following is an excerpt from McCain’s nomination:
Ms. McCain never ceases to find creative ways to promote literacy both inside and outside the classroom. Her students find that when they reach high school, she has prepared them for not just the next grade but for college and careers. She willingly stayed after school to assist students with speeches for the Optimist Oratorical and Poetry Out Loud contests. She coached Bennett Middle School’s Reading Rally Team to several championships, participated in the Bucks for Books program and oversees numerous school activities. As one of her students has stated, “I could not envision a better ‘shining example’ of this award than Ms. McCain.”
Mrs. Teresa McCain became Chair for the Board of Directors for Horizons at The Salisbury School as of January 1, 2015. She replaced Dr. Pierre Genvert, having led the Board for two years. McCain joined the Board of Directors in 2012 and has more than 25 years of experience in education. She currently works as at James M. Bennett High School teaching English.
